Caps Lock Showing a Crosshair Instead of Your Brush?

If your brush cursor appears as a precise crosshair instead of showing the brush shape preview, your Caps Lock key is turned on. This activates Photoshop's precision cursor mode — it's not a bug and it's not a compatibility issue. Simply press Caps Lock once to turn it off and your brush preview will return immediately.

Use Photoshop Brushes
Like a Professional

Downloading great brushes is only half the job. Here's how experienced designers and digital artists get production-quality results every time.

Organise Into Named Groups

Loading hundreds of brushes at once slows Photoshop significantly, especially on older hardware. Instead of dumping every pack into a single list, create named groups in the Brushes panel.

Brushes Panel ☰ Menu New Brush Group

Name groups like Textures, Smoke & Fog, Illustration — drag packs in. Your panel stays clean and Photoshop stays fast.

Use Blending Modes First

Paint on a separate layer set to a blending mode rather than directly on your base. You'll get better results at 100% opacity + blending mode than 50% opacity on Normal.

Export Your Personal Collection

Once you've curated your favourite brushes across packs, save them as a single portable ABR file. Setting up a new machine then takes seconds instead of hours.

Select favourites with Ctrl/Cmd+click in the Brushes panel
Open panel menu → Export Selected Brushes
Save the .ABR file to your cloud storage
Re-import instantly on any machine with one double-click

Inner Glow for Multi-Color Effects

By default, Photoshop applies a single foreground colour to any brush stroke. For effects that need multiple tones — realistic fireworks, colourful splatter, or watercolour bleeds — add a Layer Style Inner Glow to your brush layer.

Layer Layer Style Inner Glow

Set blending mode to Screen or Color Dodge, pick a gradient, adjust size. A single-colour stroke instantly becomes a rich multi-tonal effect — no extra layers needed.

Master the Brush Settings Panel

Every brush is fully customisable via Window → Brush Settings. The right settings transform any basic brush into a completely different tool.

Shape Dynamics Size jitter · organic variation
Scattering Spread marks randomly
Color Dynamics Shift hue mid-stroke
Transfer Pen pressure → opacity

Create Your Own ABR Brushes

The best custom brushes come from real-world scans. Scan ink strokes, torn paper, fabric or leaves at 600 DPI on a white background — the darker the pixel, the more opaque the mark.

Edit Define Brush Preset

Name it, click OK — it's instantly available in your Brush Tool. Physical texture quality is unmatched by any digital creation.

Yes — every brush pack on this page is available for free download with no hidden fees. Most packs are licensed for personal and commercial use, meaning you can use them in client projects, print materials, social media assets, and products without paying royalties or licensing fees. Always check the individual pack page for specific license terms, particularly if you're redistributing designs that heavily feature the brushes.

✓ Free download ✓ Commercial use ✓ No registration

All brush packs are compatible with Photoshop CS3 and above — that's every version released since 2007. This includes CS3, CS4, CS5, CS5.5, CS6, all Creative Cloud versions (CC 2014 through CC 2024), and Photoshop 2025. If you're using Photoshop Elements, compatibility varies by pack as Elements supports a more limited brush feature set.

CS3 → CS6 CC 2014–2024 Photoshop 2025 ✓

There are three methods — pick whichever suits your Photoshop version:

  • Double-click the .ABR file — Photoshop opens and loads the brushes automatically (fastest method, CS6+)
  • Go to Window → Brushes → ☰ Menu → Import Brushes and select the ABR file (CC 2018+)
  • Go to Edit → Presets → Preset Manager → Load (works on all versions from CS3)

For a full step-by-step breakdown of all 3 methods, see our installation guide above.

Absolutely. ABR files are platform-independent and work identically on Mac and Windows — no conversion, no compatibility issues, no extra steps. Installation is the same on both platforms, with the only difference being keyboard modifiers (Cmd on Mac vs. Ctrl on Windows).

✓ macOS ✓ Windows ✓ M1 / M2 / M3 Apple Silicon

These brushes are in ABR format — native to Adobe Photoshop only. Procreate uses its own .brush or .brushset format, and Illustrator uses a completely different brush engine. Neither application is directly compatible with ABR files. However, many of our brush categories (splatter, grunge, watercolour) have equivalent packs available in Procreate format if you search specifically for those.

Photoshop loads all brush presets into memory at startup. If you've installed dozens of large packs, this significantly slows launch time and brush switching — especially on older hardware. The fix is straightforward:

  • Keep only your actively used brushes in the main preset list
  • Organise others into named groups inside the Brushes panel
  • Uninstall packs you rarely use and reload from ABR only when needed

Open the Brushes panel, right-click any brush preset and select Delete Brush. To remove an entire group at once, right-click the group folder and select Delete Group. This removes the brush from your current preset list but does not delete the original ABR file from your computer — you can always reinstall from your downloads folder.

Yes, and it's easier than most people expect. Create your brush shape on a white background (darker pixels = more opaque brush mark), then go to Edit → Define Brush Preset, give it a name, and it's instantly available in your Brush Tool. For the highest quality, scan real-world textures — ink strokes, torn paper, fabric, leaves — at 600 DPI and define them as brushes. The physical texture quality is unmatched by any digital creation.

💡 Scan at 600 DPI for best results

An ABR file is Adobe Photoshop's native brush preset format. It stores one or more brush tip shapes along with their default settings (size, hardness, spacing). Double-clicking an ABR file on any computer with Photoshop installed will automatically open Photoshop and load the brushes into your Brushes panel. ABR files are platform-independent and work on both Mac and Windows.

Adobe Brush Format Platform independent

Yes. All brush packs on this page are built from high-resolution source material — typically 2500 pixels or larger at the widest dimension — and tested at 300 DPI print sizes. They scale cleanly from web thumbnails all the way to large-format print without pixelation or blurring. A brush that looks sharp at 72 DPI but breaks at 300 DPI is useless for professional work — which is exactly why we test every pack before publishing.
