YouTube Thumbnail Sizes — Complete Resolution Reference
Every YouTube video automatically generates multiple thumbnail sizes stored on YouTube's CDN. This YouTube thumbnail grabber detects and fetches all available resolutions for each video:
| Quality | Resolution | Filename | Best For | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Default | 120 × 90 px | default.jpg | Tiny embed previews | Always |
| Medium (MQ) | 320 × 180 px | mqdefault.jpg | Mobile search results | Always |
| High (HQ) | 480 × 360 px | hqdefault.jpg | Blog embeds, social posts | Always |
| Standard (SD) | 640 × 480 px | sddefault.jpg | Social media covers | Most videos |
| ★ HD | 1280 × 720 px | maxresdefault.jpg | Recommended — crisp on all screens | Custom thumbs |
| 4K | 3840 × 2160 px | maxres2.jpg | Print, large displays | 4K uploaded videos |
| YouTube Spec | 1280 × 720 px | — | Official upload recommendation | Creator guideline |
Important: HD and 4K thumbnails only exist when the video creator uploaded a custom thumbnail at that resolution. Videos without custom thumbnails have auto-generated frames that may appear letterboxed at the HD size — in these cases the HQ or SD versions show correctly cropped images.
YouTube Shorts Thumbnail Downloader
This tool fully supports YouTube Shorts thumbnail downloading. Shorts URLs follow the format youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID — paste them directly and the tool detects the Shorts format automatically, fetches all available thumbnail resolutions, and shows the same download and compare options as regular videos.
Note on Shorts aspect ratio: YouTube Shorts are natively vertical (9:16). The thumbnail YouTube stores and serves is still in the standard 16:9 container — so the downloaded image will be the full-resolution JPG file with potential letterboxing if the Short was filmed vertically. This is expected behaviour from YouTube's storage format.

This YouTube thumbnail downloader auto-detects the video ID from any URL format. Just paste whatever you have:

What Makes a High-CTR Thumbnail — 6 Design Principles
After downloading and studying thumbnails from top-performing channels, these are the design factors that consistently drive higher click-through rates:
High contrast colours
Complementary pairs — orange/blue, red/green — make thumbnails visually pop against YouTube's white feed background.
Bold, short text
Maximum 3–5 words using thick fonts with strong drop shadows. Legibility at the 90×50px mobile thumbnail size is critical.
Expressive faces
Human faces showing exaggerated emotions (shock, excitement, joy) consistently outperform scenery-only thumbnails in A/B tests.
1280×720 resolution
Always design at YouTube's official recommended size. Low-res or blurry thumbnails hurt CTR across every surface and device.
Brand consistency
Top channels use the same fonts, colours, and layouts across all videos so subscribers recognise thumbnails before reading the title.
One focal point
Leave breathing room. Your viewer's eye should land on one clear subject within 0.3 seconds. Crowded thumbnails lose clicks.
